What Is C25 Concrete and When Should You Use It?

C25 concrete reaches a characteristic compressive strength of 25 N/mm² after 28 days of curing. In US terms that’s roughly 3,600 psi, and under the European EN 206 standard the same concrete is written as C25/30.

It sits in the middle of the domestic range — stronger than the C20 most people use for shed bases and paths, weaker than the C30 specified for structural work. That middle position makes it the default answer for driveways, garage floors and anything carrying vehicle weight.

What the number actually measures

The 25 is newtons per square millimetre of compressive strength. Concrete is tested by casting samples from the delivered load, curing them under controlled conditions for 28 days, then crushing them in a press and recording the load at failure.

It’s a characteristic strength rather than an average, which matters. The specification means that no more than 5% of test results should fall below 25 N/mm². A plant aiming for C25 will actually target something closer to 33 N/mm² as an average, so that the natural scatter of results keeps the bottom end above the line.

That built-in margin is one reason plant-batched concrete outperforms site-mixed concrete of nominally the same grade. A site mix has no statistical control at all — you get whatever that particular batch produced.

The 28-day timing is a convention rather than a physical limit. Concrete keeps gaining strength for years, but the rate slows sharply after the first month, so 28 days became the industry checkpoint. At 7 days a C25 mix will typically have reached about 65 to 70% of its final figure.

The mix ratio behind it

Site-mixed C25 is 1 part cement : 1.5 parts sand : 3 parts coarse aggregate by volume, with a water-cement ratio around 0.45 to 0.5.

Because half buckets are awkward and inaccurate, most people double it and count whole buckets: 2 cement, 3 sand, 6 aggregate. Same proportions, far easier to batch consistently.

Using all-in ballast instead of separate sand and stone, the equivalent is roughly 1:5 cement to ballast — one bucket of cement to five of ballast. That’s a step up from the 1:6 used for C20.

Where C25 is the right choice

Driveways. This is the main one. Cars concentrate load through four small contact patches, and modern vehicles are heavier than they were. C25 with mesh handles a family car comfortably.

Garage floors. Similar loading to a driveway, plus point loads from jacks, stands and dropped tools. C25 is the practical minimum; C30 is better if you’ll be working on vehicles.

Foundations where specified. Building control will sometimes ask for C25 rather than the GEN3 used for simple strip footings, particularly for anything supporting a heavier structure.

Exposed slabs in frost-prone areas. Higher strength means lower porosity, which means less water absorbed and less freeze-thaw damage. Combine with air entrainment for the best result.

Steps and thresholds. Concrete edges and nosings take abuse. A stronger mix resists chipping.

Where it’s overkill

Using C25 everywhere is a common and forgivable instinct, but it wastes money on jobs that don’t need it. A shed base, a garden path, a greenhouse slab or a post-hole collar all perform perfectly well in C20, and C20 costs around £8 per cubic metre less.

Blinding layers and mass fill should be leaner still — GEN1 or even GEN0 — because that concrete is filling space rather than carrying anything.

The price steps are small — around £8 between each grade. Against the total cost of a job including groundwork, formwork and labour, upgrading a grade is one of the cheapest decisions available. Downgrading to save money almost never pays.

Reinforcement and C25

C25 is frequently paired with A142 mesh on domestic driveways and garage floors. The two do different jobs and neither substitutes for the other.

The concrete grade determines how much compressive load the slab carries and how durable the surface is. The mesh controls crack width — it does not stop cracking, it holds cracks tight so they stay hairline rather than opening up. A high-grade slab with no mesh can still develop wide cracks; a low-grade slab with mesh in it still crushes under point loads.

If your slab has mesh in it and building control is involved, the specification will usually be written as an RC grade rather than plain C25 — RC25/30 for example. RC grades carry tighter limits on cement content and water-cement ratio precisely because the concrete has to protect the steel from corroding.

Ordering C25 from a supplier

Ask for it by name, and be ready to answer three follow-up questions: what the concrete is for, what slump you want, and whether you need any additives.

Slump describes workability. A slump of 75mm is standard for slabs; 100mm to 125mm flows more easily into trenches and around reinforcement but is wetter and slightly weaker. If a driver offers to add water on site, understand that it moves you down a grade — ask for a plasticiser instead.

Ask what the free unload allowance is, and have the site ready before the truck arrives. Waiting time on a small load is charged by the minute and adds up faster than most people expect.

Some suppliers will quote ST2 rather than C25. They’re broadly equivalent standardised mixes, and ST2 is often slightly cheaper because the specification is looser. For domestic work the difference rarely matters; for anything an inspector will check, ask for the designated grade.

Common questions

What psi is C25 concrete?

About 3,600 psi. The conversion is 1 N/mm² ≈ 145 psi, so 25 × 145 = 3,625.

Is C25 strong enough for a driveway?

Yes for cars and light vans, laid at 100 to 125mm on a properly compacted sub-base with A142 mesh. If regular deliveries by heavier vehicles are likely, go to C30 at 150mm.

What is the difference between C25 and C25/30?

Nothing — they’re the same concrete. C25 is the UK shorthand using cube strength. C25/30 is the EN 206 dual notation giving cylinder strength first and cube strength second. Cubes read higher because of how the sample is restrained during testing.

Can I mix C25 on site?

Yes, at 1:1.5:3 or 1:5 with ballast. Expect it to test lower than plant-batched C25 because site mixing has no quality control, so build in a margin. For anything an inspector will sign off, order ready-mix with a delivery ticket.

How long before C25 reaches full strength?

28 days for the specified figure, though it continues gaining slowly for years. At 7 days expect around 65 to 70%. Foot traffic is fine after 24 to 48 hours, vehicles after seven days.
